The Top Health and Fitness Apps – Choosing which one is Right for You?

logging resultsSometimes we need a little help and motivation on our journeys to becoming healthier, fitter and stronger females and there are so many different apps out there that can give you that bit of encouragement along the way. There are apps that will help track your food intake, the calories you have consumed and also give a breakdown of all of your macro-nutrients. There are ones which will track your exercise and even ones that will remind you to drink some more water. Let’s have a look at just some of the top health and fitness apps that are available today.

Yes, we all need some motivation or accountability to get on our way to becoming a better version of ourselves, to help keep us going when the going gets tough, or the daily grind of our busy lives get in the way. If you haven’t got round to starting your journey yet have a read of my post ‘Often all you need is a little motivation’.

In that post I mentioned one of my favourite apps to use is a really simple My Plate Tracker app by Livestrong.com.

Livestrong app

This is a great free app that you can use on your Smartphone or laptop and can give you a breakdown of the calories and macro-nutrients of everything you eat as well as track how many calories you burn whilst doing certain exercises. The thing I also like about this one is you can add your own recipes to it as well and then it will work out the nutrition for those too…

Time to get running…

The couch to 5K app is a great little app for those who want to stop being a couch potato and start running. It has a step by step 9 week plan to help you get you started running and progressively work towards completing your first 5K in just 9 weeks. This is a simple but effective app for those who have already or are thinking about starting running as their weekly exercise choice. There are actually several different versions of this app available but they all seem to be pretty similar, so I’d just chose one of the free ones to start out.

Fitocracy

These guys offer a great app that comes in either a free or paid version that costs you only $1 a day, though unfortunately you do really need to upgrade to get the most benefits.

With the paid version you get your own personal training coach who conducts a fitness assessment and then tailor makes nutrition and exercise plan to suit your needs. They state that the coach will be available anytime to offer you help and motivation. You can download a free version of the app both on iTunes and the Google Play store.

My Fitness Pal

healthy mealThis is another very popular app so needs a mention, it states it has one of the largest nutrition and calorie databases including over 5 million foods. It does have an exercise tracker with over 300 exercises available in it’s database, though seems very much geared to those want to lose weight by just calorie counting. As we know constantly cutting calories is not necessarily the healthiest way to go but if you need to incorporate that in your fitness journey then the My Fitness Pal app be a good option for you.

Strong Lifts 5×5

Strong lifts app

This is probably one of the best fitness apps that I have come across for those of us that like to get in a great workout in the minimum amount of time. If your main aim is to get stronger by building more compact muscle and burning fat at the same time then the Strong Lifts 5×5 app is definitely worth taking a look at using and it is available both for iPhones and Android users.

It’s a very simple strength building program based on the principle that you do 5 sets of 5 compound exercises three times a week. As you know from my post about Compound exercise workouts these are a great way to get a workout for the maximum benefit in the shortest amount of time.

They instruct you to start out with light weights whilst getting the correct form and then progressively increase your weights to get the maximum benefits and I love the fact that they also stress the importance of rest and recuperation for your hard worked body. When you first look at this it does seem as though it is geared more towards men but remember we all have the same muscles that need to be trained in order to get that strong sexy body!

I hope you found these app suggestions useful for your personal fitness journey, if you try one please drop me a line and let me know what you think of it. Or if you use a different app that is great for your fitness needs and goals why not share it in the comments below so others can benefit from it too.

Hope you all have a great week…
